NBA TV vs. League Pass: Which Do You Need?
NBA TV is a channel; NBA League Pass is an out-of-market game package. They overlap, but the names do not promise the same live games. A team-local subscription is a third kind of product.
| Product | What it identifies | Question to ask before buying |
|---|---|---|
| NBA TV | A scheduled channel with games, studio coverage and other NBA programming | Is my game on NBA TV, and does my location have a local restriction? |
| NBA League Pass | A package for eligible out-of-market games, with location and national restrictions | Does this exact matchup play live in my location? |
| A team-local service | Eligible local games for a particular team | Does my ZIP code qualify, and is this a national exclusive? |
| A national broadcaster’s service | The games included in that outlet’s rights and subscription | Is this event included in the tier I have? |
Is NBA TV included with League Pass?
The NBA’s current help page says NBA TV is included with NBA League Pass and League Pass Premium. It also describes a separate U.S. NBA TV subscription. Local restrictions can still apply to NBA TV game broadcasts. Check the NBA TV product guide for the current offer in your market.
Why the purchase location matters
A package bought from a TV provider and one bought directly from the NBA can use different billing and authentication routes. Start with the service that sold it. The NBA’s U.S. provider guide explains which purchases can authenticate through providers; buying directly does not automatically activate a provider’s package.
Prime Video is another common source of confusion
A Prime Video national game and a League Pass subscription offered through a platform are different products. If a signup screen names an extra sports package, read what that purchase includes. Our Prime Video schedule identifies the national games labeled Prime Video; our affiliate signup link does not purchase League Pass.
Use these checks before choosing a plan
- Find the matchup on today’s schedule.
- Read the national label and your team’s local guide.
- Open the service’s actual event page while signed into the account you intend to use.
- Check the plan name and location eligibility before confirming a purchase.
A missing broadcast field is not an endorsement of any package. For a blocked game, use our blackout troubleshooting guide. We omit prices here because promotions, billing routes and eligibility can change; verify current terms at checkout.
